Collin County, Texas is experiencing a growing housing crisis for adults with mental, intellectual and developmental disabilities. An estimated 2,000–3,000 individuals in the county require supported residential housing, yet hundreds remain without stable placements.
Statewide, more than 108,000 Texans are waiting for Medicaid waiver services, often for over a decade. As aging caregivers are increasingly unable to provide care, the demand for community-based housing such as host homes continues to rise. Expanding host home capacity is one of the most effective and cost-efficient solutions to address this urgent need.
A Potential Solution – Host Home

A host home is a supportive living arrangement where an individual with mental, intellectual, developmental, or other supportive needs lives in a private family home rather than in a large institution. The goal of a host home is to provide a safe, stable, and nurturing environment where the individual can live as independently as possible with a host family, while receiving the level of support they need for daily life.
Host homes are often part of community-based services designed to help people live in typical neighborhoods and participate in everyday community life. Instead of living in a facility with many residents, the individual becomes part of a small household where relationships, routine, and personal support are central to daily living.
